Sewing Project – How To Make Homemade Baby Bibs

I just recently became a first time grandmother and have been enjoying the new little addition to our family. I am also an avid crafter and seamstress so I can often be found in my craft and sewing room creating some wonderful things for my friends and family.

With the new addition of the baby girl to our family, I decided I wanted to make some homemade baby bibs. I thought the process would be difficult, but once I got started…I realized how easy it was to create my own bibs for our grand-daughter.

Here are the supplies you will need:

1 pre-purchased terry cloth bib to use as a pattern
1 package of double fold bias tape (2 yard package), per bib
sewing machine
sewing thread
1/4 yard of cotton terry cloth fabric
Scissors
Miscellaneous sewing supplies

Note: If you really want to be frugal, you can recycle some old terry cloth bath towels for this project.

Lay your pre-purchased baby bib down on a piece of white paper and trace around the shape using a pencil, then cut out your paper pattern. Next, unroll your bias tape and cut off a piece of bias tape measuring 34″ in length. Pin your paper pattern down onto your terry cloth fabric and pin into place. Cut around the paper pattern and then remove the pins. Cover and pin the bias tape around the raw edges of the sides and bottom of your bib, don’t cover the neck area just yet.

Using your sewing machine, stitch the bias tape into place and fasten off. Cut another piece of bias tape measuring approximately 26″ long. Attach the center of the bias tape to the center neck area of the bib, pin into place. (note: a piece of bias tape about 10″ long is left at both ends of the neck edge for the ties.) Using your sewing machine, stitch around the neck opening so that you are attaching and covering the raw edges.

You can use your pre-purchased one as a guide on how it should be sewn.

Decorations: If desired, you can use 3/4″ wide eyelet lace instead of bias tape in step one of the sewing, but you will still need to use a coordinating color of bias tape for the neck area and ties. You can embroider a name or nice design onto the front of the bib or purchase some cute iron-on applique’s.

Tips for Preschool Halloween Crafts Project

Brainstorming for preschool Halloween crafts ideas could be a bit tricky especially if you’re planning it for kids who have short attention span. You have to make sure that the projects are fun and exciting for them. There are many ideas surrounding Halloween crafts for preschool projects though, and you can easily find them online. This article will show you basic projects for preschoolers and how to add some excitement to them.

When brainstorming for preschool Halloween craft ideas, consider the following:

- Safety – Always keep the kid’s safety in mind. When planning for a preschool Halloween craft, choose projects that don’t involve needles, cutters, glue guns and other items which can be dangerous to kids. Those tools can easily poke the eyes, cut, and burn. Have your students use children’s scissors instead, as they are more blunt. Also, it’s good to have projects that utilize materials such as punchers, non-toxic glue, tape, and small staples as these don’t pose much risk.

- Difficulty level – Ideal Halloween crafts for preschoolers are those that are colorful, catch children’s attention, and most especially easy to do for them. A project can be too tiring or difficult for preschoolers to do. Instructions should be kept short and simple.

- Interest – Although Halloween projects are generally interesting, teachers would know better and always add a bit more twist, fun and color to ordinary projects especially since these projects are designed for kids to do. Kids get bored easily so try to make projects more out-of-the-ordinary.

Mask

Masks are great for preschool Halloween crafts project. They are pretty versatile, too. You can make hero masks, animal masks, and monster masks. All you need are paper plates, crayons, punchers/staples, and garters.

For the materials, all you will need are some paper plates and crayons which you would want to distribute. Then, instruct your preschoolers to draw two big eyes in the middle of their paper plate. Then instruct them to draw anything they like around those eyes. Show them examples of simple animal faces like bunnies and cats using coloring books and other kids’ books, so they have an idea of what to draw. Your students can draw a witch face, bat outline, or practically anything.

Then, give them time to color their drawings. You may also suggest stripes, spots, hearts, stars, and designs that are easy for the kids to draw. For more interest, you can use glue sticks or Elmer’s glue to stick glitter and sequins on their masks. The kids will absolutely love this idea. You can also purchase colorful feathers so your students can stick them to their masks. Remember to keep your projects interesting!

Wings

Another interesting Halloween crafts for preschoolers are Halloween wings. You can create bat wings, angel wings, or butterfly wings out of cardboard. You may pre-cut the shapes to make the project easier for the kids. Just punch two holes on each wing so you can attach a string where the arm can go through and stay secured to the wing.

Once the cut out wings are distributed, you can suggest easy designs for your pupils to follow. Give them time to draw, color, and explore their imagination. Also have them glue sequins, glitter, and feathers to add interest.

Planning Halloween crafts for preschool kids is easy when you have these three secrets to keep in mind: simplicity, safety, and of course, fun.

Craft Project – Thanksgiving Holiday Garland

When our daughter was around 8 years old, she invited over a few friends for the day to do some crafting with us. Since it was the beginning of November, we decided to make a Thanksgiving holiday garland.

This project can be done in one afternoon. If you are doing several of them at a time (group project), I suggest precutting all of the fabric strips ahead of time.

1 roll of sisal twine (2 or 3 ply for durability)
scraps of homespun fabrics
all-purpose craft glue (or glue gun with adult supervision)
acorns, twigs, pinecones, dried pods
scissors

Step 1: Measure out the length of sisal twine that you will need to make your garland. We usually do 3 to 4 feet. Cut it from the roll. Tie each end into a loop, this way when you hang it up, you can easily do it via the loops.

Step 2: Collect scraps of homespun or various fall print fabrics. We like to use 4 to 6 different prints and/or colors. You will want to cut out strips that measure approximately 1″ wide by 4″ long, or however long you would like. I usually cut out 50 to 75 of these strips when I make a garland.

Step 3: Lay your sisal twine out across the floor. Take your strips and lay them out in front of the sisal twine and alternate your colors and prints. Let the children sit on the floor to do this part of the project. You will want to tie all of the fabric strips onto the twine until your garland is filled up. There is no wrong or right way to do this. You can make your garland as full or as sparse as you would like.

Step 4: Take a nice walk outdoors and collect some fall theme nature items, such as: pinecones (small and medium-sized), acorns, dried pods, small twigs, pieces of bark, etc. Once you have your items collected, you will want to glue several of them onto your garland. I like to space them out about every 6″ or so. Let your project dry for a few hours to make sure all of the items are glued firmly into place.

Now that your garland has been made, you can decide where to hang it. I like seeing them hung on a mantle, across a doorway or up a staircase.

Optional: If you don’t want to use found nature objects to decorate your new garland, you can visit your local craft store and purchase fall or thanksgiving items to glue onto it.

How can I make a craft project (such as a pillow) look less bumpy when using fiberfill?

I can never seem to make it smooth or uniform when using fiberfill, no matter how tightly I pack it.
Especially when the material being packed is knitted yarn.

Kids Recycling Craft Project With Tin Buckets

Every holiday season we get a lot of yummy goodies tucked inside beautifully ornate tin buckets. After we quickly devoured the contents of these tin buckets, we are left with the empty containers. While they do make good keepsake container for all kinds of small items in the house such as coupons, receipts, mail, cleaning supplies and such, there are times I wish I could do more with them. Here’s an easy kids craft project involving recycled Christmas tin buckets.

Recycled Tin Bucket Luminary Kids Craft Project

Material:

Empty tin buckets
Design (simple design works best here – think about stars, trees, hearts, flowers)
A large nail
A hammer
Tape
A votive candle

Instructions for Recycled Tin Bucket Luminary Kids Craft Project

Fill the tin buckets with some water and freeze the water first. This will make it easier to hammer the design into the tin buckets.
Tape your design around the can.
Take the large nail and hammer it until it punches a hole through the tin bucket. Continue to drill holes around the border of your design. You need enough holes so you can see what the pattern is, but try not to punch the holes too closely together.
After you have punched holes all around the design, remove the paper & tape from the tin bucket.
Wait for the ice to melt. Cover it with running water to speed up the melting process. Dry the tin bucket with a towel. Place a votive candle in the bottom of the tin bucket.
Sit back and admire your work.
