Halloween Party Ideas 2009

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year – a perfect opportunity to have a Halloween Party. Whether you are having a child’s party or adult party there are many themes and ideas that will keep your guests talking for years. Here are a few fun and easy suggestions:

Costume Party. This is nothing new, but you can put a twist on it. You can make it a Pirates and Princess party for kids or a male/female pirates party for adults. Famous people party works best for adults, with costumes available for celebrities, sports personalities, politicians, etc. If your crowd isn’t the type to put on elaborate costumes, simply ask everyone to dress in black and orange.

Non-Spooky party. Kids, especially young ones, can be scared by the darker side of Halloween. If you want a non-spooky party for kids, try a different theme like a sports party (where guests have to dress up like dancers, hockey players, football players, sumo wrestlers, etc.) Super heroes is also a fun theme. A girls’ party could be princesses and fairies. Animal costumes is another easy crowd favorite – especially if you decorate the room like a Halloween barn.

Invitations. Home made invitations are always fun and impressive. You can print photos, clip art or pictures from the internet to glue on paper. You can also cut the invitation card into silhouettes – like ghosts, pumpkins, witch hats, etc. The invitation could have something that springs out when the viewer opens it. Stickers and confetti are easy ways to decorate cards. Keep the card stock in Halloween colors like black, orange, purple or green.

Decorations. My favourite party look for Halloween is to replace all of the lights in the party room with black lights. Put black tablecloths on the tables, cover the walls with black paper or black posters. Cotton batting, spread thin to look like cobwebs, can decorate your black table cloth. Get white plastic plates so they will glow in the dark and appear to be floating on the table. For kids, Mountain Dew is a great beverage to put in clear plastic glasses, since it glows in the dark. Strings of orange lights are available at many party and dollar stores. Use these to line doorways and walls, or put them inside pumpkins instead of candles.

Food: Black and orange foods are always appropriate (such as as orange cheese, Cheetos, black licorice, chocolate, pumpkin cupcakes) as is spooky baked goods and candy. Carve out pumpkins and line them with clear plastic bags to use as chip bowls or flower centerpieces. A glowing fruit punch bowl or colored ice cubes make for fun drinks.

Music. Burn a cd ahead of time with fun Halloween and Thriller type songs. Sound effects are fun to mix in. You can often rent or buy dry ice machines or disco balls if you want to make the dance floor really “spooktacular”.

Party Food ? How to Organise Fun Food for Little Kids and Control the Sugar Intake

One of many parents’ biggest concerns when organising a kid’s party is the food and how much sugary junk is appropriate. Should we take the attitude that it’s a party, it doesn’t happen every day, so go crazy with the sugary treats. Or do we show concern for the health problems of today’s society and set a good example with lots of healthy nutritional items and nary a red thing in sight.

Well, before even thinking what to serve, how about thinking how to serve it. No matter what food you choose to serve you can at least control the portion sizes by organising the food into equal portions before even putting it on the table.

As you know, kids have a habit of grabbing, so one of my favourite styles of delivery is putting the food in a party box or bag. It works great with younger children as you can make sure everyone gets a bit of everything instead of little Bobby grabbing all the chocolate biscuits before anyone else gets a look in. It is also a great way to transport food to a park or other venue as it is already neatly packed away and can all be popped in the boot of the car without mess.

A plain brown paper bag works really well, as long as it is the type with the flat base. You could use a colourful bag from a craft shop or even a small inexpensive basket. I have a collection of these baskets which I picked up for $1 at a discount store. I spray painted them all different colours and my friends and I have used them over.

If using a bag, simply stack all your finger food inside fold down the top and seal with a colourful sticker. Write each child’s name on the bag or box too as this method will enable you to easily cater for specific dietary needs. With a basket, pop the traditional serviette in the base then load up with the goodies, sandwiches, fruit, mini crisp bags, and a cup cake and so on. Talk about easy portion control!

If you are going to use a table you can still have some control over portions by serving the food in one sitting then pack it away when everyone is done. A buffet style delivery works well with teenagers, but leaving food out on a party table can be messy with little fingers around. It also means you can stay in control of who is doing what and won’t be distracted by missing children who are often found raiding the left over crisps…and eating them under the table.

Don’t forget to check with parents before the day them about any allergies or special dietary needs their child may have. To be on the safe side I always recommend avoiding anything with nuts in at parties as so many children these days are allergic

Host A Kids Crafting Party Very Easy

Looking for a unique theme party ideas for your child’s upcoming birthday? It seems like all the old party themes have been done to death. A clown, a pony, a princess, pin the tail on the donkey, how about something new? A great idea for a party that will get all the kids involved in fun activities is to throw an arts and crafts theme party. It’s really easy and not as expensive as some other party ideas.

The first step is to pick out some crafts for the kids to make. You’ll find tons of ideas on the Internet and even right here in our kids project section. You can also find ideas at http://www.britishlisting.com/arts-and-crafts.html. When picking out projects for your craft party, be sure to keep the kids ages in mind. Some crafts will be more appropriate for younger kids and others for older. For example, building a birdhouse may be a great idea for 14 year olds but not at all appropriate for 5 year olds. Be sure to keep all projects “kid safe” for the age group at your party. Also think about whether you’ll have boys or girls at your party. Girls may not enjoy the same craft projects as boys and vice versa.

One last thing to think about before deciding on a selection of projects is what supplies you’ll need. Chances are, you wont have everything you’ll need on hand, so you’ll need to pick some supplies up at the store. You want to pick out several projects that use the same supplies. Like making clay jewelry, clay figures, or anything else out of clay. That way if none of the kids want to make a project, you won’t be stuck with a lot of left over supplies at the end of the party. Once you know what supplies you’ll need, make a trip t your local craft or hobby store,

On the day of the party, before your guests arrive, get out your craft supplies and set up stations for each project. Also put some written instructions for each project at the stations. Once all your kids have arrived and you’ve let them have some time to socialize, start the crafting. Tell them about the types of craft projects you have for them and let each kid decide what they want to work on. Be sure you have enough adult supervision to keep an eye on the kids and help out when needed.

When all the kids are finished with their projects, set up a mini craft show so they can show off their work. The back yard would be a great place. A great idea would be for all the parents to get there a little early to pick the kids up. That way they can enjoy the craft show and spend a little time getting to know all the other parents. The best part about throwing a craft party is that all the kids get to take something home that they made themselves. Something they can have to remind them of the great time they had at your party.
