Sustainable Enterprises: Endorsed by Mother Earth

Social responsibility towards the environment is fast becoming part of the business psyche of our society. Starting with the big guns who call it “corporate responsibility” to smaller companies pursuing eco friendly processes, there is a new sensitivity in the way businesses are run. The small entrepreneur is not to be left behind either, with a number of sustainable enterprises taking birth in this era of environmental consciousness.

There is no arguing that having respect for our surroundings is the right thing to do; but did you know that it’s also the smarter option? In the long run, it will save precious resources and possibly prevent calamitous occurrences. No wonder, organizations are taking to it in a big way. As an entrepreneur, you could do your bit to support the cause, or even better, make a business out of several options of sustainable enterprises.

Seeking inspiration? Look no further, for we have a range of ideas on sustainable enterprises you could make your own!

Work with recycled paper: You could set an example conserving trees by starting an eco- friendly recycled paper business. You could include greeting cards, paper mache items such as wall hangs, Easter eggs, pencil holders and paper bags in your repertoire. Use your creativity to design them and package attractively; coupled with the go-green motto, you will see your sales soar. You could also run classes to teach people craft using recycled paper,

Let nature do the talking: Tourism is big all over. You will always find people who’d like to take a trip to the countryside; hills; forests or anyplace where nature is in full bloom. Zero in on your favorite tourist spot and start an adventure enterprise. Your initial capital commitment might be higher but so are the returns. Be different from the others in the business and adopt an eco-friendly approach; talk against littering, include only biodegradable items in your travel pack, inform them about nature’s wondrous ways….

G(r)O(w) organic: This could be a refreshing alternative to all the junk food that abounds. Turn the public’s health consciousness to your advantage by growing organic food. Even what you grow in your backyard could fetch you big profits. Market your business through pamphlets professing the pros of eating healthy.

Capture nature at her best: You could translate your interest in nature photography into a sustainable enterprise. Use the photographs to make calendars or just sell them as portraits. you will find valuable resources to help you step into the field.

Enter the realm of power: Solar energy is the next big thing! The world is fast running out of resources and governments everywhere are trying to get everybody under the sky to install solar panels in their homes. The scope is enormous and you could play your part anywhere in the industry, from manufacturing to marketing! Learn more about the potential of this field through “Survey of the Emerging Solar Energy Industry” by J.A. Bereny, F. de Winter.

Start a website: If technical stuff is your forte, you could design a website dealing with the environment. Make it interesting by offering online courses, other ideas on starting sustainable enterprises, eco-friendly products, books etc. There is a lot of money to be made in this business and a quick stop will tell you how to make some of it your own.

“Ethical Money: How to Invest in Sustainable Enterprises” by John Hancock, and “Sustainable Enterprise: Profiting from Best Practice “by Christopher Stephen Brown, are other good resources on the subject.

When it comes to sustainable enterprises you will never run out of options, even the lemonade you sold in grade three falls under this category. What’s more, they also offer you a chance to make a real difference to our planet!

Create An Egg-Citing Easter Celebration

While many families have their own traditions to celebrate Easter, often eggs, bunnies, chicks, and egg hunts are part of the festivities. Here are a few fun ideas for Easter decorations, crafts, and games to help you celebrate this springtime holiday with your family.

Eggstravaganza – Children of all ages love to color and decorate Easter eggs! Coloring eggs has been a part of spring festivities for centuries. In both Passover and Easter traditions, the egg symbolizes new life. This year consider involving the whole family in an evening of Easter egg decorating. Younger children kids have fun using Q-tips to dip into egg colorings to decorate their eggs.

Easter baskets – Before Easter arrives, get creative and help your children make their own Easter baskets out of clean half-gallon milk or juice cartons. Cut a 4″ piece off the bottom of the milk carton. Clean thoroughly and cut a piece of craft paper to wrap around the container. Glue craft sticks to create a fence around the container and let dry. When dry, use small flowers or decorative craft foam pieces to decorate the container. Drill a hole to opposite sides. Twist two pipe cleaners together to make a handle. Attach handle on container and fill with Easter grass. This also makes a very nice Easter table decoration. See picture on www.KidsSoup.com/easter.html .

Egg hunt – The egg hunt is the highlight of most Easter celebrations. To make it even more special for younger children, create some cute bunny masks together. Use lightweight paper plates and pink craft paper. Cut out an oval for the bunny’s face and decorate. Cut out holes for eyes. Draw and cut out ears and staple on paper plate. With a hole punch, make holes on each side of the mask and attach a elastic band to fit around your child’s head. You can find a bunny mask pattern on www.kidssoup.com. To ensure that even the smallest hunters get their fair share of the eggs, assign an egg color to each child. To make the egg hunt fun for older children, hide jellybeans instead of chocolate eggs. Design a scavenger egg hunt around the neighborhood. Working alone or in teams, each team solves clues leading to other clues, and eventually to the Easter treats. Create different clue trails for each child or team.

Easter games – Keep the excitement going after the egg hunt by playing some of these games:

Easter Obstacle Course – Separate children into two teams. Provide each team with one spoon and a sugar egg or plastic Easter egg. Each team needs to navigate its way around and through various obstacles without dropping its eggs.

Easter Bunny Hop – Conduct a relay race for two or three teams. Each player must cover a certain distance while jumping with a plastic egg between his/her knees.

Egg Roll – Using only their noses, children must roll an egg across the finish line. This also makes a good relay.

Easter cookies – Your young guests will no doubt be ready for a snack. In addition to any other delicious treats you plan, allow children to decorate some baked sugar cookies shaped like eggs, rabbits, or chicks. (You can bake the cookies ahead of time and freeze them until ready to decorate). Provide bowls of pastel-colored icings, jelly beans, sprinkles, and other decorations.

Here’s to a wonderful tradition-filled Easter!

Having Fun With Kids Easter Activities

One of the best things about holidays is the enthusiasm that kids have. This enthusiasm offers many opportunities for kids to learn while they have fun. There are many kids’ Easter activities that are more than just fun and games. They are also opportunities to learn and develop skills and creativity.

There are some great outdoor Easter activities for kids that just need you to add an egg or two and you can have egg and spoon races, egg throwing competitions, egg hunts and egg relays. For the egg and spoon races have the kids race as they carry an egg on a spoon. To make the races even more interesting create an obstacle course that requires them to go up, down, in, out, through and around different obstacles. If they can’t all race at once, time each person individually to see how long it takes them to complete the course.

The egg throwing competition can be done in pairs. Give each pair an egg and stand them a short distance apart. Partners have to throw and catch between them. Any pair that drops an egg is eliminated. The partners then move one step further apart and repeat. See how far apart the winning pair can be stand while still throwing and catching.

Of course egg hunts are a big favorite at Easter. Hide real eggs or Easter eggs for children to find. A wonderful kids’ Easter activity is to turn an egg hunt into a treasure hunt with clues leading them from place to place. The final clue can lead to the ‘treasure’ which can be prizes or Easter eggs and candy.

Relays can also be played with eggs. Convert an egg and spoon race to a relay and you have a fun and active Easter activity. Be creative and you will come up with other ways to incorporate eggs into relay races.

But Easter fun doesn’t have to stop outdoors. There are also loads of great kids’ Easter activities that can be done indoors. Easter crafts can include making Easter wreaths, Easter cards, Easter baskets and decorating eggs or dyeing eggs.

Easter games are also a great kids’ Easter activity for the indoors. Make your own Easter board games, Easter bingo games or play a few Easter word games. To make your own Easter board games, you need some card and colored pens and a bit of imagination. Make a ‘Snakes and Ladders’ style game but use ‘Bunnies and Eggs’ instead. Your board game could also be a track style game that races bunnies around a board from the start to the finish. Add a few ‘hazard squares’ and ‘reward squares’ to the board and then just roll the dice to see how far to move on each turn and race each other to the finish.

You can also make Bingo cards that are filled with Easter words and then play Easter Bingo. You might also like to try a Easter version of the game ‘Hangman’ for a word game.  Another great word game is to use a word like ‘chocolate’ and then compete to see who can make the most words using the letters in the word ‘chocolate’. This is a simple Easter activity to organize and it will also get kids really thinking. It doesn’t matter whether you are indoors or outdoors, there are loads of fun kids’ Easter activities that you can do with the kids. Just use your imagination and the possibilities are endless!

Easter Resources for Children

Copyright (c) 2008 Sandy Simpson

Memory Cross, Inc. has created a number of great new ways to share the Gospel with kids and adults this Easter. Each Memory Cross card consists of four unique panels that make a never ending loop that will fascinate both kids and adults.

Easter Sunday is March 23rd. This Lenten Season, leading up to the celebration that Jesus is alive today and working in the world, have your children color beautiful Easter Story coloring cards or give them a unique folding Easter card explaining what Easter is really about; God’s love for them.

If your church is having a Easter Egg Hunt for the children in your community, why not tuck an Easter Plan of Salvation card in each of their Easter baskets along with the colored eggs and candy. Let them know that Easter is about much more than colored eggs, bunnies and candy. What a way to witness to them and their families.

Easter is the time we celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection. Inviting children from the community for an Easter Egg hunt is a great way connect with kids and adults. However we need to do more than just give out candy and Easter Eggs. The Easter coloring card is a fun way for your kids to learn the Easter story, while creating a really fun craft project. The Easter Memory Cross plan of Salvation is a brightly colored card that clearly tells what Easter is really about.

Think about sending either the Easter Plan of Salvation cards or the Easter Story coloring cards that your children have colored to our troops deployed in Iraq and all over the world. This will not only entertain and fascinate the soldiers but will provide them with a clear message of what Easter is really about.

If your kids color the Easter coloring card and send to the troops, what a great way to support the troops and share the Gospel all at the same time.

If your church has shut-ins give them one of the Easter coloring cards colored by the children from your church or day care?

Memory Cross Easter cards also make a great resource for your children’s story time. During your children’s sermon, you can share the Easter Plan of Salvation cards with your children or use them with your Children’s church. Encourage them to take it home and share it with their parents and friends.
