Crafts For Kids – Cinna-Shapes (Fun With Cinnamon And Sandpaper)

This craft project is easy and is a great way for small children to join in the decorating fun. Cinnamon sticks are a delicious way to make the transition from summer to autumn, and this is a craft that is simple to do and smells great.

Age Group: 3-6 with help, older with supervision

Time: Less than an hour

Materials needed
• 1 sheet of sandpaper per child. While finer grit sandpaper would be best for this project, whatever grits of sandpaper you have on hand will work just fine. Sandpaper can be purchased at your local hardware store and the higher the number the finer the grit.
• 1 cinnamon stick per child. You can find inexpensive cinnamon sticks in your nearby craft store. These cinnamon sticks will not be used for cooking, so you do NOT want to buy the expensive cinnamon sticks sold at your grocers in the spice aisle.
• Sturdy scissors. Cutting sandpaper is not easy, though finer grit is easier to cut than the coarser varieties. Tin snips or heavy-duty shears work best for this project, but may not be appropriate for young children. Use your judgement, and you may opt to have children use a good pair of craft scissors instead. As a reward for all of the hard work, cutting through sandpaper will sharpen your scissors.
• Pencil. You will need a pencil to draw the pattern of the shape that you want to cut out.
• Hole Punch
• Ribbon
• Permanent marker

Preparation
1. To keep messes to a minimum cover your work area with a newspaper, drop cloth or old sheet.
2. If you have some small children doing this craft, it is a good idea to have some pre-cut shapes available for them to use.

Process
1. Give each child a sheet of sandpaper (or a pre-cut shape), a pencil and a cinnamon stick
2. Have each child draw a simple shape on the backside of a sheet of sandpaper.
3. Instruct them to cut out their shape.
4. Then rub the cinnamon stick across the rough side of the sandpaper demonstrating for the children.
5. Have the children do the same thing with their cinnamon sticks making sure to cover the whole sandpaper shape.
6. Use a hole punch to make a hole in the top of each shape.
7. Slip a loop of ribbon through the hole.
8. Write the child’s name on the paper side of the shape with a permanent marker.

Variations
• Cut out several sandpaper leaf shapes, rub them with cinnamon, and use them as decoration for a door wreath in September and October.
• Make scary Halloween shapes to decorate a classroom or the front door.
• Sandpaper Cinnamon Shapes make great Christmas ornaments when cut in classic holiday shapes like an ornament, bell, snowman or wreath.

Make it a Learning Experience
• Have the children describe what happens as they rub the cinnamon stick on the sandpaper shape. Compare the bits of cinnamon on the sandpaper to ground cinnamon. Are they the same or different? How?
• Learn where cinnamon comes from and how it grows. What does a cinnamon plant look like? Older children can apply it to geography and learn about spices and the spice trade.
• Find out why sandpaper sharpens scissors.
• For very young children who are learning classroom readiness skills, have the children identify pre-cut shapes and have them match a pair of shapes.
• Most children find the texture of the sandpaper intriguing so making a set of sandpaper flash cards by gluing the shapes onto cardstock offers further practice.

Clean Up
• There is not much to clean up. Simply fold up the newspaper or cloth and check the floor for any sandpaper scraps or cinnamon bits.
• Take a deep breath and enjoy the aromatic scent of the freshly ground cinnamon which will linger for several hours.

Arts-crafts-halloween Crafts for Kids

Balloon Ghost: To make this fun Halloween decoration you will need a white balloon, scissors, white plastic grocery or garbage bags, tape, string and a black marker. Cut the plastic bags into strips leaving an uncut edge to hold the strips together. Blow up the balloon. Tape the cut up bags around the balloon to make the ghost’s body. Make sure the balloon is upside down when you tape the bags on so that you have something to hang the ghost from. Draw a face on the balloon to make the ghost’s head. Tie a string to the balloon and hang the ghost up.

Egg Carton Spider: For this craft project you will need an egg carton, googly eyes, scissors, pipe cleaners and crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Cut one section out of the egg carton. For more details www.greateducationonline.com Poke four holes in each side of the cup with scissors. Put a pipe cleaner into each of the holes and bend them to look like spider legs. Draw a face on the spider with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

Pompom Spider: Supplies needed for this craft are yarn, scissors, pipe cleaners, cardboard, glue and googly eyes. Cut yarn into a 2 foot long piece and a yard long piece. Cut a piece of cardboard into a 3 inch by 2 inch rectangle. Loosely wrap the yard of yarn around the cardboard piece. Take the yarn off the cardboard, being careful to make sure the loops stay together. Put 4 pipe cleaners on the yarn loops. Tie the yarn loops and pipe cleaners together tightly with the 2 foot piece of yarn. Cut the loops in half to make a pompom shape. Bend the pipe cleaners in the shape of spider legs. Glue googly eyes onto the spider.

Pasta and Beans Skeleton: This craft project is made with a piece of black construction paper, glue, dried beans and several types of pasta (small shells, wagon wheels, ziti, elbow macaroni, salad macaroni, spaghetti, spirals, etc.). Lay out the pasta and beans in the shape of a skeleton. Elbow macaroni is good for ribs. Spaghetti can be used as toes and fingers. Small shells or small beans make good joints. Lima beans are perfect for hips. After you are satisfied with the layout of your skeleton, glue it down.

Ghost Necklace: For this craft project you will need Elmer’s glue, a small paper clip, googly eyes, wax paper and string. On wax paper, make a ghost shape out of your glue. Unbend the paper clip and reform it into a V. Stick the ends of the V into the glue at top of the ghost’s head. For more details www.greatindustrialguide.com Put googly eyes on the ghost’s head. After a few days, the glue will turn completely clear. Peel it off the wax paper and thread your string through the paper clip to turn it into a necklace.

Jack-o-lantern Pinata: Make a perfect Halloween party item by gathering a balloon, newspaper, flour, water, a bowl, a pot, a wooden spoon, scissors, orange craft paint, a paintbrush and a black marker. Make papier-mâché glue by mixing 1/2 cup of flour into 1/2 cup of water. Then stir the flour and water mix into 2 cups of boiling water. Simmer for a few minutes. Let it cool. Take newspaper and tear into 1 inch wide strips. Dip strips of paper in the glue and wrap around the balloon. Repeat process, covering the entire balloon. Let a layer dry and then add another layer. It dry completely, then pop the balloon, and remove it. Cut a small hole in the top to put in the candy. Decorate with the orange craft paint and black marker, making a jack-o-lantern face. Hang the pinata and have a party!

Fun Summer Activities to Do Together or With Their Friends for the Self Confident Parent – Part1

Fun Summer Activities To Do Together or With Their Friends for the Self Confident Parent – Part 1

“I’m bored!” “I have nothing to do!” “What should I do now?”

Are these some of the things you are hearing or have heard from your child or children this summer? Are you running out of things to do? Here are some fun activities that you can do with your kids. You can even have your kids invite friends and do these activities together.

But first, here is something to think about. A girlfriend of mine had a very good suggestion that will prevent your child from complaining about being bored. She sends them to the refrigerator and taped to the door is a list of chores that she has written down for them to do, when they complain that they are bored. Needless to say, her children never complain about being bored.

As a self confident parent, if you are looking for some things that are actually fun to do, here are a couple of great activities or ideas:

1) Do a craft project together. This is one of my favorites when my kids were younger. You can buy a craft kit or make up your own project, if you are crafty. One of the projects my kids liked to do was to cut out paper snowflakes. Another one was to figure out different ways to fold airplanes and find out which way flew the best. We would also paint wooden cut outs (that I had purchased from a craft store), for instance, gingerbread men during the holidays. There are all sorts of kits that you can buy from a craft store, like Michael’s Arts and Crafts or JoAnn’s Fabric store. Another very simple idea, that I used to do when we had a play group and it was my turn to host, was to take a walk. We would pick up leaves, flowers, etc. We then bring them back and paste them on a page to make a picture. We have also bought the kit to make permanent plates, cups, and bowls. After you order the kit, have your child draw a picture (or if they are very young, you can write their name, date, and trace their hand) with their markers on a special piece of paper. You then send it back to the company who will mail it back with their artwork on a plate or bowl. (For pictures on a cup, the picture is inserted after it is drawn and is not sent in.) In fact, to this day, we still use those plates for our meals.

2) Bake cookies or a cake. My kids loved to help me stir the dough and then when the cookies were done baking, they got to frost and decorate them with sprinkles. A fun thing to do is to make up a story about your decorated cookie before you could eat it. Another great idea, which I usually use at my children’s birthdays, is to buy store bought cookie dough, in the refrigerated section. I usually take a chocolate chip cookie dough and a sugar cookie dough, and press them down on to two pizza baking sheet. I spread the cookie dough to the edges of the baking sheet until it looks like a pizza. Then bake it. After it is cooled, I have my child spread the frosting of their choice and then decorate it with different colored sprinkles and colored icing (from the store and in the ready make tubes). He has a blast. We then add candles to it. Another great idea, is to buy fancy molds. I have, for in-stance, the football stadium Nordicware mold. After the cake it baked, they like to sprinkle different colored sprinkles in the inside of the stadium to look like fans in the stadium.

3) Create memory books. You can buy inexpensive or expensive photo albums. You can give each child their own or share a book and make a family album. Next have your child cut out their favorite pictures from magazines or give them copies of their favorite photos. Use acid-free glue, double stick tape, or special double sided photo stickers to stick the pictures on to their books. Then decorate the pages with acid-free stickers, markers, stamped images, or cut outs. Another great idea is to make dream journals or wishing boards. You cut out things that they want, from weekly ads or magazines, and paste them onto a poster board. You can have them cut out pictures of people that they want to be, for instance, a singer, a dancer, a football or basketball player, a golfer, a doctor, etc. or cut out pictures of their dream house, etc. They can cut out places that they would like to visit. The possibilities are endless. Or you can make a book with a spiral bound notebook and decorate the cover or buy a notebook binder and decorate the cover. Then have your child write down their favorite jokes poems, or memories. You can even copy the jokes or poems and then cut and paste them into their books. You can make autograph books. You take a book and dec-orate it. You then have their friends or relatives write little notes to them or you can start writing little notes to them on a weekly or daily basis. You can write down your wishes, dreams, or special memories of them down.

Anyway, these are just a couple of fun activities that you and your child or children can do with you or their friends that will help foster their self confidence and yours as a self con-fident parent. Have fun!! Have a great summer!

How To: Make Foam Refrigerator Magnets

If you are looking for an inexpensive craft project to make with children, you will want to try out this craft idea. Within a matter of 20 minutes, you can make several foam refrigerator magnets.

Appropiate Age Group: 4 and up

Here is what you will need:

Coloring books (featuring simple designs such as flowers, animals, cartoon characters, etc)
Child Safety Scissors
All Purpose White Tacky Glue
Wiggle Eyes
Beads, Buttons, Sequins, Feathers and other miscellaneous crafting trinkets
Foam Sheets (buy 1 of each different color to match your designs)
Magnets
Fine Tip Black Sharpie Marker

For the project that I made with my nephews, we selected a coloring book that had animal pictures in it for preschool aged children. You will want to cut out the pattern by cutting close (but not on) the outline shape.

We selected the following animals: frog, pig, monkey, cow, puppy and a lamb).

For the purpose of this project, I will refer to the cow refrigerator magnet that we made.

Select a sheet of foam to match the color of your animal, in this case, a white piece of foam. Trace around the pattern by placing the reverse side of the pattern down onto the foam sheet. Once you have it traced, use the scissors to cut the shape out by cutting on your traced line.

We then took a scrap piece of peach colored foam and made a nose for our cow and glued it into place. Above the nose, glue on 2 wiggle eyes. Take the black fine tip Sharpie marker and draw black ‘cow’ spots on the cows body and head. We also used the marker to color in the cows tail and hooves. To finish off your cow, glue a 2″ piece of magnet onto the back and let dry.

Try to be creative when adding accents to your magnets, you can use feathers, beads, buttons, sequins, charms, ribbons and other left-over small trinkets from other craft projects.
