Profit From Your Knowledge – Become Your Own Craft Book Publisher!

If you’ve been a crafts person for some time – regardless of the level you think you’re at – you have valuable knowledge. Knowledge that other people will gladly pay for. All you need to do is write it down and become your own craft book publisher!

Before you think that’s too simplistic an answer, or even a bit sarcastic, let me assure you that is not my intention at all.

You see the age-old barriers to publishing your own craft book are gone. Not only can you use the hugely profitable method of digitally publishing and delivering online but even if you chose to go the traditional printed soft or hardcover route there are print-on-demand specialists who will happily produce just one or two copies of your craft book at very reasonable rates.

Not so long ago if you wanted to publish a craft book you’d have to jump through many, many hops – and for not a lot of reward. First you would have to find an agent (approaching publishers direct was usually unsuccessful). After convincing your agent that the book had merit you’d then have to trust that the agent could find a publisher.

Traditional publishers are notoriously difficult to convince, and not surprisingly. They would have to make a serious investment in pre-production and advertising before they had any chance of showing a profit. Many, many good craft books ended up not getting to press simply because the numbers didn’t add up.

If you managed to survive the cull then twelve months or so later you might start seeing some royalties. Around ten to fifteen percent of the cover price.

Very few people got rich writing a craft book.

Now all that has changed. Digital craft book publishing is a reality and dozens of craft books that might never have seen the light of day are now being published by the craftspeople themselves. You don’t need an agent, you don’t need a publisher, there are ways of marketing your craft book that are zero cost.

The result is not a paltry 10 or 15% but profit levels as high as 90% of the cover price.

Of course there are bound to be other barriers, aren’t there? Surely it can’t really be that easy to become your own craft book publisher?

Well the only possible thing that some craftspeople might consider a challenge would be creating some sort of website from which to sell their craft book. To be frank, with the ease of publishing that some website systems offer, and the alternative of running a craft blog, there really is nothing to stop you.

You might have to learn a few things you don’t know at the moment but as a craftsperson, learning is part of what you do pretty much continually so that shouldn’t hold you back.

A Sad Craft Publishing Story – Don’t Let It Be Yours!

When it comes to craft publishing I’m a big fan of doing it yourself. With current technology anyone can publish their own craft book. It’s very satisfying personally and the profitability can be remarkable. What’s more, once established it’s almost a craft business model that almost runs itself.

The other day I read a story which further convinced me that if you have a craft book in you then going the traditional publishing route can be fraught with difficulty and disappointment.

This is someone who is quite well known online and an experienced crafts person. To be honest I’m a little surprised they hadn’t gone the self-publishing route in the first place. However, our friend had been approached by a large publishing house and asked if they would be interested in writing a craft book on a particular subject which they are known to be expert at.

Not surprisingly, she agreed, and set about putting together an expansive proposal with plenty of detail about content, examples of pictures, etc. Probably took her quite some time. Still, it’s what you need to do if you choose to go that route. The package was duly sent off and then there’s the wait to see if all of this was acceptable to the publisher (who, let’s not forget, has asked this crafter in the first place).

I would be asking myself if that time could not have been better spent on creating and publishing her own book.

Anyway, the book was accepted, months were spent actually working on it. It was submitted, edited, resubmitted and finally accepted and ready to publish. Months of effort would be rewarded with a published craft book on general sale in bookstores all over the country.

Except that unfortunately during the process the publisher was sold to another company. Work on all craft book publishing was halted. Our friend has no book in print and, depending on the wording of the contract, may not even have the rights to take that book elsewhere.

Which is is the problem when you hand control to someone else. It’s a sad story but a true one, and not the first time I’ve heard something similar.

Now you can argue that craft publishing through a major company gets you a better chance of having your book in the nation’s bookstores – and you would be right. But how are you going to guarantee that your book will actually be published? You can’t.

So what if you publish yourself? Well you can distribute a digital version online that can be sold all over the world, 24/7. Then for “real” books you can work with a print-on-demand company who will print as few as one if that’s all you need. You don’t pay any money for that up front either! Then on day if a big publishing house comes along and wants to sell your craft book you are in a position of strength. You already have income that they need to better. Now that’s a happy story!

Publishing your own craft book is a lot easier than you might realise. Certainly well within the grasp of most crafts people. You can get more free information here: Craft Publishing and at the same time pick up your free copy of the highly acclaimed ebook Craft Success Online.

Craft a handmade Birthday card

If you have an artistic hand and you like to add a personal touch to gift a birthday card then it is very simple to make on at your home. It will require some materials that are usually found at home and time of minimum 15 minutes. Cards craft book helps you in making cards with minimum efforts.

Many times it also happens that you don’t find the right card of your choice and so it is a great idea to craft one of your own. You should collect materials such as a white blank card, birthday border sticker, happy birthday sticker, birthday cake sticker, red balloon stickers, green gift box stickers, blue birthday candle stickers, green birthday candle stickers, yellow birthday candle stickers, blue double note sticker, red double note sticker, yellow single note sticker, red single note sticker, green single note sticker, red bold tip pen.

Instructions for making a birthday card
1. First cut the border sticker from the sheet of stickers. Then cut the border in half and center one half of the border at the top of the card. Once you are satisfied with the look, peel the sticker from the back and press it to the card in the predetermined spot. Center and attach the other half of the border sticker to the bottom of the card.

2. Then center and attach the Happy Birthday sticker below the top border.

3. Next center and attach the Birthday cake sticker below the happy birthday sticker but remember to leave enough room to write the name of the recipient.

4. Now arrange and attach a red balloon sticker on either side of the happy birthday sticker.

5. Then arrange and attach two blue candle stickers slightly above and to the left of the red balloon sticker on the left hand side. Line up a green candle sticker with the closest candle sticker and press it to the card. Attach another green candle sticker next to it with the same spacing between them as between the two blue ones. Repeat with the remaining set of candle stickers, that is the yellow ones.

6. Arrange and attach the double and single note stickers above, beside and below the red balloon sticker on the right.

7. Arrange and attach a green gift box on either side of the cake and then press into place.

8. Write the name of the recipient when you are ready to give the card to someone.
