Does anyone have craft ideas using an assortment of items from various left over craft supplies?

I have a large tub of craft supplies from 13 years of Girl Scouting. We are doing our final camp out and I’d like to use up some of the supplies. I have yarn, floss, paints, foam pieces, fabric, popsicle sticks, glue, construction paper & probably some more odds ‘n ends. The girls are 16-18. I’m looking for some ideas to use these up. Thanks in advance!

When Kids Are Playing During Their Summer Vacations

Rainy days and summer vacations always cause mothers and teachers a moment of dismay. How to entertain the children if they can’t go outside and play? Better yet, what kinds of children crafts will help to break up a day filled with lesson plans, errands and other responsibilities?

Children crafts are as varied as the types of children they’re meant to entertain. For younger kids, crayons, coloring books and plastic figurines will keep kids busy for hours, but many parents and teachers prefer a more ‘hands-on’ approach to crafts.

In the old days, our parents made us play clay out of flour, salt and water. That was great stuff, but today, Play Doh is more popular than ever and is a cheap craft that kids from 2 to 10 will enjoy playing with. Many of these types of dough, including sculpturing clay, will allow children to create animals, monsters and anything in between.

Children crafts can be created with simple ingredients like paper, glue, scissors and crayons or markers. Designing cards, masterpieces or just scribbling will keep various age groups entertained, and only imagination is the limit to what children can produce if given the opportunity.

Watercolors and paintbrushes are also a favorite with kids, and finger-painting is still as popular as it was thirty or forty years ago. If you don’t want the mess of paints, crayons or markers, try beads, yarn and plastic needles to help your kids create construction paper animals or pockets for letters, chores or homework assignments.

Children crafts are an important part of your child’s life and help to encourage creativity and ingenuity. There are no right or wrong crafts to choose for kids, other than making sure that they are age appropriate. Younger children may need supervision and help at times, but older children are fine in creating and designing things out of whatever craft supplies you have on hand.

A child, a box and a box of crayons can be turned into fun children crafts when making spaceships or forts, and encouraging children to use their imagination provides ample stimulation for their creativity. Lacing beads, yarns and glues and old socks can be turned into animals that will delight your children and give them a sense of pride and accomplishment when they see what they can create from a few spare parts.

Children love to draw, and large pads of drawing paper placed on an easel will provide ample opportunities for your child to discover the joys of pencil, crayon, marker, watercolors and paints. Remember, even Michelangelo had to start somewhere!

No matter that type of children crafts you choose, make sure that floor space is protected to eliminate stress for already busy Mom’s and Dad’s, and that any craft supplies that you have gathered for your children are age appropriate. Offering praise, even if you don’t know what you’re looking at when your child shows you his or her masterpiece, is a great way to instill confidence and pride in accomplishment with children.

Fun Ways to Count Down to the Holiday With Your Kids

Kids love Christmas but waiting for the big day to arrive isn’t so much fun! Little ones who don’t yet understand counting days can get frustrated when they don’t know when Santa is finally going to arrive.

One way to make the count down to Christmas a little easier is by finding fun ways to count down the days in a way they can understand. For really young kids, it is better not to start the countdown more than two weeks before Santa’s arrival. This is enough to seem like an eternity to them-and it will keep them interested and involved with the holiday planning.

There are a number of Advent Calendars available on the market so that you can mark each day leading up to the holiday in a special way. One truly creative one is the building block Advent Calendar that has you combine smaller models into a bigger one once every week until Christmas in addition to opening a new door each day.

You really don’t have to spend money on an elaborate advent calendar when you can easily create one of your own. All are built on the same principle whether it is opening a door, taking a piece away, adding a piece, or anything you can do on a daily basis.

To make your own simple and enjoyable advent calendar, use a piece of green construction paper and cut out in the shape of a Christmas tree. You can let your child use other colors of paper to create decorations or just use as is. Glue individually wrapped pieces of candy, like peppermint discs onto the tree, one for each day until the holiday. Each day your child will take one piece of candy from the tree and when they are all gone, the holiday is here! Not only is this a helpful way for little ones to count down to Christmas, they also get a treat every day.

Another way to count down to Christmas that is fun for all ages is “The Twelve Gifts of Christmas”. Go to your local dollar or variety store and choose twelve small age-appropriate gifts for each child. Wrap them up in little boxes and top with small bows. These can be placed under the tree with the other gifts or on the tree as cute decorations. Your child will be permitted to open one gift each day until they are all gone and the big day is here! This is a great way to extend the joy of opening gifts without spending a lot of money!

Print out color sheets for The Twelve Days of Christmas and let your child color one each of the last twelve days. These are easy to find on a variety of sites and you should find them with the right difficulty for the age of your child. Find a place to display the art work as part of the Christmas decorations. Children love to contribute their own art work to any holiday and they will know when they get to “1″ that they have made it to their favorite occasion!

You can also make a paper chain, but instead of using it for a decoration, make the chain based on the number of days until Christmas. Every night before bedtime, tear off a piece, and count the remaining links. Even small children can tell at a glance how many days are left if you use this method.

Whatever method you choose, make your holiday countdown a fun part of the festivities, and you will both look forward to the big day!

Holiday Decorating with Kids

Planning Christmas with kids gives you an opportunity to get them involved. Christmas is a truly magical season for children, and letting them decorate for Christmas will not only give kids a sense of accomplishment with what they created, it will get your house decorated as well!

If you don’t mind homemade décor on your tree, your kids can craft edible treats to hang. Spend an evening stringing popcorn to drape around the tree. You can make edible gingerbread men or one inedible ones that will last for years. Either one will bring wonderful aromas into your home. The kids can help roll out and bake the gingerbread, and then help you hang them with ribbon. Let your kids decorate ornaments with glitter and paint, or create your own by taking pictures of your kids princess costumes and dress ups and mounting them on construction paper.

Let your kids help you decorate the tree. If they’re not very excited, try letting your girls wear their kids princess costumes and the boys wear their capes and Santa hats. Put music on so the little tots can dance, and let the kids roam around the tree. The music and costumes will make decorating more of a magical experience and less of a chore.

Every Christmas brings a plethora of Christmas cards. Everyone is eager to send off holiday greetings in a red holiday dress. Rather than store the greetings in a disorganized ramble on the refrigerator, try placing them in a photo tree made to slide pictures in. This way the kids can slide the greeting cards in and out by themselves to take a closer look at their family and friends.

Gingerbread houses are a great way to spend an evening together as a family. You can make the house from scratch or buy a gingerbread house kit, and fortunately the kits are typically inexpensive. Let the kids help. Older kids can do most of the assembly themselves; so let them go to it! For toddlers, put the frosting on the house first, and allow them to place the candies on top. Display the gingerbread house. You can use it as a centerpiece on the table, or as an item of décor on a shelf or countertop. The kids will be so proud to show guests their creation!

A personal favorite childhood memory is cutting out snowflakes with my family. I was wearing my red Christmas dress, and my sisters and I were wandering around the kitchen, cutting paper and singing along to Christmas music. The little scraps of paper probably made a mess, but no one seemed to mind. We hung the snowflakes in our windows. We argued about whose was the best, and I felt a sense of pride whenever I walked past one of my snowflakes.

Another fun decorating opportunity for Christmas with kids is to make the countdown chain until Christmas. Let the kids choose an obvious place to put the chain. You can make the chain more interactive by adding topics of conversation on the chain. Suggestions include: “What is your favorite Christmas memory?” “What do you like most about Christmas?” “What is your favorite part of the Christmas story?” While your kids answers to these questions might be short, they open up the opportunity for you and your kids to converse more with one another.

Holiday decorating with kids is a great chance to bond as a family. So pull out those princess costumes, turn on some holiday music, and get started!

A Family Homemade Christmas From A Parent’s Heart

The time of year has arrived when everyone is scampering around the shops and malls in a tizzy trying to find just the right gift for that special someone in their lives. The holiday season has become more commercialized as it’s ever been. Wouldn’t it be nice to see more families have a simple homemade Christmas without all the stress?

Just thinking about it gives me 10 fun ideas the whole family would enjoy, especially from a parent’s perspective. Enjoying a homemade Christmas with your children can be fun, educational, and entertaining. Children need to experience the true meaning for the season and I can’t think of a better way than sharing and giving homemade gifts.

1) Homemade Christmas cards. All you would need is a computer, printer, and some sort of card/stationery software and you’re ready to go. I print out newsletters myself every year for the holidays. You could do this or make your own cards. Get the kids involved, they’ll love helping with the various designs. Also you can always have the kids make them with crayolas and colored markers on construction paper.

2) Homemade Christmas ornaments. Decorating your tree with homemade items can be both fun and economical. You would be surprised at how much money you would be saving. Get everyone together (Dads too), and make some holiday traditions and memories.

3) Baked items in festive tins for gifts. If you are financially challenged this year, these would be practical gifts that would always be appreciated. Have the kids help make them up special for family and friends. And yes, the made from scratch recipes are always the best.

4) Croteched items. Now this is more for the Moms of course unless you have a teenage daughter that would be interested in crocheting. You can make various gift items including potholders, scarves, afghans, and angels, just to name a few.

5) Craft items. For this, the sky is the limit. You can make all sorts of crafty novelties, including holiday placemats, stockings, gift bags, paper snowflakes, pine cone ornaments, beaded ornaments, and many more projects.

6) Traditional holiday recipes, such as main dishes, pastries, breads, cookies, and pies. Get the whole family involved including non-immediate members. If you’re hosting this year, have your guests bring one homemade item per family.

7) Photo albums. Making photo albums is always fun. Your kids will love helping with this project. Gather up all those old photos that have been stored in your closet for years and put them to use. If you have a large amount of photos, you can make up many small ones or standard sized ones if you choose. Be creative with borders and backgrounds. You can also use quotes with each photo. Also various quilting patterns can be used for the outside of the albums.

8) Scrapbook of memories. For this you can save special bows from gift packages, gift tags, gift wrap, festive stickers, tree garland, holiday cards, and letters to Santa, just to name a few. Get your children coloring pictures. You can also use some of your favorite photos. A family tree is also another great idea. Gather creativity and imagination from all family members.

9) Homemade decorations for your front window. I used to really have a lot of fun making things for our window when I was a small child. All you would need is construction paper or poster paper, scissors, crayons, glue, and glitter. I always had fun with the glitter.

10) Recipe books. This project can be a lot of fun when you include recipes from various family members. You can share stories that go along with each recipe and also add photos. For this, you will want to use all the family favorites that have been passed on from generation to generation. These are great for gift ideas.

Make these activities a family tradition year after year. You will be making memories that your children will reflect on for years to come and also teaching them the true meaning of the Christmas season.
