Learn How To Use Pony Beads To Make Crafts And Jewelry

It’s very easy to learn how to use pony beads to make crafts and jewelry. Before you do, keep in mind that while they’re a lot like seed beads, they are much bigger. They come in various colors and shapes, but the pieces made of plastic and glass are the most popular. Whatever the makeup, they can be used for making numerous items and different fashion accessories.

How to Make a Key Chain

Required Tools and Materials

Beads (different colors and sizes)
Embroidery thread
Scissors
Key rings

Step 1

Cut six strands of thread a foot long. You can use different colors.

Step 2

Fold this in half. Create a loop knot in the ring.

Step 3

String the objects together. Seven for each side is enough; too many and it will be brittle. Do the same for the other string. Make a double knot on the last head. This will secure all the heads. Trim the end and it is finished.

Note: use suede strands for key chains that will be used regularly. Thin macramé materials are also good choices. Don’t use yarn, as it is too flimsy.

Make a Multicolor Bracelet

All you’ll need are colorful pieces and an elastic cord. The cord should be double the length of their wrist. String the pieces on the cord. Once you have installed enough, secure the knot and trim the end.

Other Crafts

Pony beads can be used for holiday decors, be it Christmas or Halloween. Aside from bracelets, these can be used for making rings, necklaces and hair accessories. If you can’t think of a design, there are numerous examples on the Net that can be downloaded.

Background

These objects were brought to America from Europe by travelers and explorers. The materials got their name because they were delivered via the Pony Express. These objects became popular among the Native Americans, who used them on their clothing, moccasins and also as necklaces. Animals were also fitted with these objects.

Shapes

These objects were known as barrels in the UK, because their original shape resembled a barrel. Today, these are made into every imaginable shape possible, from hearts to butterflies to different animals.

Plastic Variants

The plastic types offer the greatest variety. These include vehicles, balls, snowmen, Santa Claus or set to certain themes. These are either opaque or transparent.

Quality transparent plastic types look like glass. There are also some that have a metallic finish. The coating will be copper, gold or silver. There are also glittery types you can try out.

These are available in many shades so you can pick the one you really like. Try putting different shades of the same color and set them on your hair. While you can do the same with glass, the plastic types are less expensive.

Pony beads are available in many types and colors, giving you plenty of options for making the crafts you want. With its varied hues and shapes, making attractive key chains or bracelets should be a breeze.

Five Ideas for Creating Fun Wooden Crafts Out of Dowel Rods

These people are wood crafters. They are followers of the older ideas that one can create their own toys, decorations, and furniture. These people can create great things with a simple wood dowel and a little work.  When a wood crafter looks at a wood dowel, they see a million ideas. These people are wood working aficionados. They see wood not as just wood, but as a medium to bring their ideas into reality. These people are artists and workers at the same time. Here is a sample of those great ideas that a simple round, wood dowel has created.

1. Beaded curtains. These curtains have a fine thread running from the wood dowel to whatever length is desired. The fine thread is then used to thread beads, creating curtain of the beads, hence the beaded curtain. These beads can also be used to create designs in the curtain by matching colors to a certain pattern.

2. Flag posts. Home owners and some apartment renters tend to decorate their homes on the inside and out with flags. These can be everything from silly flags used for solely decoration to the patriotic, American flag. No matter what flags are hung, the thicker wood dowels are most often used because they have such great strength and beauty.

3. Toy wands. Every aspiring princess and wizard of the day has to have his or her own wand. To meet this need, the wooden dowel can be utilized and decorated to match the personalities of the children while still making the toy affordable. Ribbons, feathers, and glitter can all be added to the wand to add to the individuality of the piece.

4. Yoyo centers. Yoyos are one of America’s all time favorite toys. The simple construction of the yoyo, paired with the ease of use and fun actions of the yoyo all make it a classic toy. The simple wood dowel makes the perfect center in which to construct the yoyo and to attach the string.

5. Shelf railings. Shelves are a necessary part of life. Some of these shelves hold precious ornaments and heirlooms. Many times these shelves have railings on them. For those who are constructing their own shelves, the wood dowel can be used to make for an interesting and unique railing on the shelf.

These ideas are just the tip of the iceberg of ideas for the wood dowel. Imagine what you may come up with using only a little creativity and a wood dowel. You just might have that perfect idea for that perfect piece of art. You also might have the beginnings of the next craze in ideas and wood crafting.

Three Great Recycling Projects for Kids

If you want to teach your kids the value of recycling, it would help a lot if you give them some hands-on experience. Learning first-hand just how important recycling is and what they can do with materials that are considered by some as trash will give your kids a greater appreciation for recycling.

A few simple crafts can get your kids started on recycling. Here are some recycling projects for kids that your children may enjoy working on.

1. A letter holder from old CDs and packaging foam

One good recycling project for kids is making a letter holder from old data CDs and foam. Old data CDs are hard to dispose sometimes, and so is packaging foam.

To make a letter holder from these materials, you would need the following:

• Four old data CDs

• Packaging foam

• Scraps of decorative cloth, art paper or pages from a glossy magazine

• Glue

• Other decorative items like beads, silk flowers or glitter

To do this recycling project for kids, glue two CDs together to make them a pair. Decorate these CDs with your choice of decorative cloth, art paper or magazine pages, and then accentuate them with beads or flowers and other accessories.

The packaging foam serves as the base of the letter holder, so you can shape it any way you want and decorate it the way you did the CDs. Afterwards, cut panels into the foam where you could insert the CDs.

2. A bird feeder from milk cartons

This is another simple recycling project for kids that will also teach them to appreciate nature. This would work well if you live outside the city; you would have a greater chance of attracting birds.

All you need to do with this recycling project for kids is to take a milk carton and cut an opening on its side. You do not have to throw out the portion you have cut out, though. You can fold it and glue it to the upper side of the opening on the milk carton so it would look like a flap. This flap should be stiff so it would not fall on the heads of the birds as they feed from the milk carton.

Once that is done, you fill the carton with bird seed and then prop it up where the birds can reach it.

3. A kite from paper bags

We usually throw away paper grocery bags, but these can be good materials for recycling projects for kids. All you need to do is to get your kids to paint these grocery bags any way they want, attach strings to it, and then go flying kites.

An important thing that you should remember when making your children do recycling projects for kids is to supervise them, especially when they are using sharp objects like scissors, so they would not harm themselves.
